Biography

Photo - Charles SovekCharles Sovek (1937-2007), an internationally known and popular award-winning artist began painting in 1956, when he had the privilege of beginning a ten year stint of art education. The schools he attended include The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Institute of Technology, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and The Art Student's League of New York, not to mention numerous private teachers, all of whom helped contribute to the artist's abilities and success.

He wrote six books: PAINTING INDOORS, CATCHING LIGHT IN YOUR PAINTINGS, OIL PAINTING: DEVELOP YOUR NATURAL ABILITY, KEYING YOUR PAINTINGS, THE BASICS, and A PAINTER'S TOUR DE FRANCE, the combined effort insuring him a world wide reputation. In addition, Sovek authored pieces, wrote book reviews, magazine articles, appeared on television, spoken on radio shows, and has been the subject of numerous magazine, book and newspaper articles. As a contributing editor to THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE, he wrote dozens of feature articles. He also authored various books on drawing, painting and the artistic life through his own publishing enterprise, THE BACK PORCH PRESS.

Sovek has an extensive exhibition history, garnered numerous awards and prizes and was been involved with many of the leading art organizations around the country including The Salmagundi Club, The Cincinnati Art Club, The Rockport Art Association, The Mendocino Art Center and The Provincetown Art Association. He was also voted an Emeritus Member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America.

Widely traveled, he painted, exhibited, conducted workshops and judged shows throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and numerous countries abroad. Charles Sovek's paintings are represented in countless private, corporate and museum collections.

Most recently, Sovek had the honor of being the subject of a PBS special entitled "Plein Air Painting in America." Part of a 5-part program, the artist represented New England, focusing on Cape Cod and its role in plein air painting today.

The artist divided his time between warm weather months in Massachusetts, exhibiting on Cape Cod at the Addison Gallery in Orleans and at the South Street Gallery in Hingham, Massachusetts. He also showed at Anne Irwin Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia.

Aside from New England, Sovek enjoyed painting trips to California, the Southwest, Paris, France and Venice, Italy, with the resulting work exhibited at all the above mentioned galleries. Cold weather months were spent painting and writing in his snug Connecticut home and studio.

Charles Sovek passed away on June 8, 2007.
