The Main Effect – My demonstration of Calm Morning suggests how the painting might have looked prior to the final stage, with all of the tonal gradations and colors in place. Note that the shapes and colors, while brilliant and incisive, are all subordinated to the overall effect. From here, the artist would have refined each individual passages, using contrast in most of the details around the center of interest.
